This week has seen some good catches along our coast. I have had quite a few reports from Seaford so thats where i will start. Both Jay ang Glenn (report writers on the site) fished Seaford on thursday but Jay fished the deep end while Glenn fished near the buckle.
Jays deep end catches: 2 bass just over 1lb about 30 yards out on mackerel fillet. a ray of 2lb 8oz caught at distance on a 2 hook 1 up 1 down rig baited with lug and squid (which i thought was an odd bait to get a ray on but my mate aint complaining) along with 15 sizeable pout. he also had 3 mack and one scad. so not a bad session for him.
Glenns Buckle catches: mostly mackerel and garfish as he was spinning and float fishing. people were hauling macks in on feathers and they seemed mostly just out of reach for the light gear. A bloke near him landed a cracking whiting just as it was getting dark, he reckons it could have been going between 1lb to 1 1/2lb and he is not one to ever exagerrate.
My old man and a few friends fished the deep end at seaford the next night (fri) and it was quite a different state of affairs with less catches. between them they managed a few bream and pout along with some mackerel and scad but not as good as the reports from thurs suggested it would be. there were lots of bathers about on the beach which also delayed their fishing.
A big thanks to Sam reed who sent me this report from Seaford: 'I went fishing at seaford 1 hour before high tide and then left at 12:30. High tide was at 09:58 so i got there at 08:20 there were already lots of people down there catching mackerel. You could see the mackerel leaping out of the water in there huge shoals. We caught fish on feathers, my dad caught 8 mackerel and i caught 24 mackerel and my second gar fish ever. It was also my dads first ever mackerel.'
Jay Bradley also fished Seaford on saturday night at the beachcomber pub area and had plenty of pout and baby thornbacks. His mate Rye also had a Codling of 1lb so they are still about.
Pevensy Bay has been producing a few good Sole, Pout, Whiting and baby Thornbacks after dark. There has also still been the odd codling as well. Brighton Marina has been same as ever with large hauls of mackerel on float, lures and feathers. there have also been plenty of garfish along with some pollack to good size. Down the side of the walls there have been pout, pollack and wrasse on ragworm baits and size 4 hooks. casting about 20 yards from the wall has seen a few red mullet and bream landed with bream taking mackerel flesh. the odd bass has come up on mackerel fished close to the wall. Brighton beaches near the banjo groin has been producing some Smoothhounds on peeler crab and ragworm baits.
Shoreham beaches and arm have been catching alot of Mackerel and some Gars on float set ups and lures. Newhaven east arm has been producing similar catches as brighton marina with the addition of some good sized mullet. Big thanks to Topcat, who fished the arm at low water up with mackerel flesh and managed to land and return two fine fish having free lined a small piece of mack on a size 10 hook next to the mackie scraps. Even more than that, he kindly helped a young lad catch his first ever mullet by showing him how to do it and giving him a go in his spot, which i know many anglers may not have taken the time to do.
East Preston beaches are still producing some smoothhounds with some cracking double figure fish being caught on peeler crab baits.

Seaford has produced mackerel, gars and scad on feathers, spinners and float set ups. There have also been quite a few scholly bass and baby thornbacks caught at dusk. After dark there have been pout, the odd sole, eels and Whiting! There have also been quite a few codling caught in the last few days as well! Tidemills has seen similar results with the addition of golden grey mullet on light tackle and maddies (red rag). this area and newhaven east arm have seen some pretty big gars caught around the 1lb+ mark. The newhaven east arm has also seen similar catches as seaford witrh the addition of wrasse and pollack down the side of the pier wall. A big thanks to Simon Pickles for this catch report and picture:
31 Aug - Seaford: Friend catches 5lb Bass to fresh mackerel at Seaford just after HT at 2.30 am. Also Gar + Mackerel to float at night.
1 Sep - Adur: Mullet & Bass to bread flake.
1 Sep - Seaford: Cod 1.5 hours after low to lug. The very quiet until the ebb when Mackerel, Horse Mackerel & Bass caught on large mackerel baits. Lost large bass to mackerel head.
Picture: Simon Pickles, 1 1/2lb Codling at Seaford
Brighton marina has being fishing quite well this week after a fairly slow start. towards the end of the weeek there were mackerel and gars being caught on both arms in large numbers. on the east arm they were also being caught along with pollack on float fished macerel strip. the usual wrasse, pout and blenys down the side. a few bream asre eing cuaght on ragworm or mackerel flesh at but 20 yards. there are still some sole, pout and whiting after dark. there was a palace pier match on the arm 02/09/07 and results and catches are as follows with thanks to Glenn Arnold for this match report:-
B.P.P.A.A Match Report 2/9/07
1st place- Ben Arnold - 19lb 9oz, 22 fish- 16 Pollack, 4 Wrasse, 2 Mackerel. 2nd Place- Sam Sampson- 19lb 3oz, 24 fish- 11 Pollack, 6 Garfish, 5 Wrasse, 2 Mackerel. Heaviest fish 1lb 12.5oz Wrasse.
Other best fish- 1lb 6oz Shad- G.Arnold. 1lb 10oz Golden Grey Mullet- G.Collings. 1lb 5oz Pollack- B.Arnold.
Fantastic days fishing had by all on the east arm of the marina, lots of good size Pollack close to the wall using float on baits such as Ragworm, Prawns and Mackerel Strips. A few good size wrasse on crab and prawns down the side. Mackerel and Garfish were steadily caught throughout the day on regular float and sliding floats.
Shoreham arms have seen some similar cathes as the marina with bass up to 4lb being caught close to the walls on mackerel baits.
As you may or may not know, i have just returned from hospital after back surgery and part of the recovery means that I cant sit at a pc for too long for a while or go fishing for up to 3 months!!! so i am really relying on you guys emailing me to let me know whats being caught and where. Please email me your catch reports even if you only caught a tiddler as it will be a great help.

This week has seen some much improved weather and catches. Brighton Marina is providing good sport with plenty of Mackerel and Gars on both arms. There was also an absolute monster mackerel of 2lb caught! There have been wrasse, bream, pout, red mullet and pollack caught down the side of the marina wall on mostly worm baits. After dark there have been some Sole and decent sized pout. there have lso been a few smoothhound pups. Mullet are showing on both arms and groundbaiting with bread is proving very effective.
A Big thanks to Nick T who emailed me the following report:
Quick report from last night - fished marina east arm peg 30 from 3pm (LT) - to midnight (HT+3).
Caught 3 bream and several mackerel and pout on a 3 hook flapper (worm and mackerel tip)
Caught 1 garfish and severel mackerel on a slider float rig
Caught 1 golden grey mullet of approx 2lb on clip down rig (fish bait)
it was a neap tide and first 2 hours of flood and hour either side of HT fished well but bites soon dropped off after that.
There have been quite a few Sole caught at Tidemills and some to good sizes. As I have not been able to get out myself I have been checking various fishing forums to get some information about whats being caught and came across this set of catches at Pevensy (White horses) from a reliable source who fished over night and had schooly Bass, Baby thornbacks and more bizarrley some whiting and a 2lb Codling!
There are still some good Smoothhounds being caught at Rustington beaches so if you have peeler crab it may be worth giving it a go after dark.
There are mullet being caught on mackerel flesh at Newhaven from the car park and rthe east arm. The east arm is also producing plenty of Gars, some very good sizes as well as some mackerel. Wrasse, pollack and pout are being caught down the side. Sole and Gurnards are being caught by casting out towards seaford.
As you may or may not know, i have just returned from hospital after back surgery and part of the recovery means that I cant sit at a pc for too long for a while or go fishing for up to 3 months!!! so i am really relying on you guys emailing me to let me know whats being caught and where. The last week has seen really rough weather which means that the water has been very dirty and some marks have been closed or unbfishable at times. Brighton Marina (when fished) has produced a real mix of fish which include eels, sole, gars, mackerel, mullet wrasse bass, baby thornbacks and smoothhound pups. Palace Pier fishing club had a match on sunday 19th and the results as follows:
1st Roy Arnold 6lb 13oz (3 Mullet 2 Mackerel)
2nd Sam Sampson 5lb 2oz (Wrasse and Gars)
3rd Ben Arnold 3lb 12oz (Wrasse)
During the match there was also a shad caught. Glenn Arnold and his mate John stayed on after and had some more fish along with smoothhound pups. Glenn reckons that if he had some peeler crab he may have had some better size smoothys.
Seaford and newhaven have also seen similar catches.
Thanks to Simon Pickles for these couple of short reports.
13-08-2007 : River Adur Airport Bank - 2 Nice thick lips to bread flake around high tide, 3lb 4oz & 3lb 12oz, also lost one of about 4.5lb at the net after a long fight.
14-08-2007 : Southwick Beach - 3lb 8oz Bass to Mackerel fillet around midnight (20 mins before high). Nice surf, perfect conditions.
Thanks to Howie for this report:
3 trips to the marina just after the smooth hounds had gone and the first 2 trips produced the usual wrass pout small bass and the odd mackrel, but i was fortunate to be fishing on the third occasion last tuesday when litteraly thousands of mackerel turned up all swimming just around the wall and then the sea turned into a boiling mass of mackerel, the shoal must have been 100 yards wide and 150 yards long out from the wall,i have never seen anything like it!!.needless to say we have all our winter fish bait now.
after having enough of catching the above mentioned fish me and keith decided to try seaford beach last night and after fishing from low tide to high tide at night we managed to catch 3 tiny pout between us!! the conditions were a bit rough and maybe after the sea has been calm for a while it just turned the fishing off?
its funny,we spent all winter wishing for the summer to come so we could fish in th sun and have some summer table fish but it is just not fishing like it did last year for us and so cant wait for the season to change and the winter fish come back as we had a great winter season last year.but who knows it may get better?
Recent Catch Report - 13/08/07 - IMPORTANT NEWS
This week there are no tide times as i have not been able to update them due to having surgery (13/08/07)This also means i will not be able to respond to emails as quickly as i normally do or update the site. All being well I should be out by the end of this week (17/08/07) but due to the nature of the surgery (back) i will not be able to sit at a computer or desk for long periods of time meaning that the site may not be updated as quickly as normal and you may have to be patient about emails. Please continue to email me catch reports as i will not be out fishing and need to know whats being caught and i can copy and paste your reports which will make my life easier, plus i will credit them to you. if you need tide times for brighton or the south the click here.
I have managed to fish a few times this week and there have been mackerel and gars caught at most locations as you would expect. I fished brighton Marina and had gars and mackerel on float fished mackerel strips. There were also some Sole caught as well as wrasse, pout and blenys down the side to worm baits. There have also been some Bream about. After dark a few more Sole have been Turning up.
Jay Bradley fished Seaford on Saturday night and between him and his mate they had plenty of mackerel, a thornback ray and a golden grey mullet. Jay also lost a good fish on peeler crab bait, he suspects it was a smoothy as it stripped line from his reel before he lost the fish.
My mate Harry fished 4 miles out off shoreham and had plenty of bream, in fact there were so many about wherever he went that the other species didnt get much of a look in.
Thanks to Nick for the following report - 'Here's a report from Marina East Arm - I fished it on weds evening from 6pm to midnight (HT-2 to +4hrs), peg 28ish.
Caught 2 nice bream on middle hook of a 3 hook rig with mackerel strip about 20m out at HT-1hr.
Caught 15 mackerel between HT-1hr and HT+4hrs - all decent size - about 30m out using a 40gm mitralite spoon and closer in on a slider float (size 2 hook baited with rag with a mackerel tip about 8ft down)
Caught 2 small pout on the bottom hook of a 3 hook rig straight down the side around HT.
Caught 2 schooly bass quite close in around 3 hours after HT, 1 on a slider float 8 ft down baited with mackerel and the other on the middle hook of a three hook rig baited with rag and mackerel tip.'
The wind appears to have got up again which means that the gars and mackerel may shy off for a few days but Bass and Eels should be on the menu as well as the chance of a smoothy.
Recent Catch Report - 06/08/07
This week has seen some really great weather compared to the last couple of months. the water is settled and the sea was very clear last week. Unfortunately the reports I have had have not been as promosing as the weather. The reason for this may be that the summer fish are slowly returning and making their way back to our areas.
Seaford - there has been a few mackerel caught as well as some gars from the beach. At night there have also been some Sole.
Newhaven East arm - I fished it friday and there wasnt much around. there was not one mackerel caught even though about 8 people were feathering for them. There was some sport doen the side with small Pout and Wrasse. There are plenty of Garfish there and some were to very very good size. There was also plenty of Mullet swimming around and in between the pier.
Brighton Marina - The West arm has been showing a few Mackerel and as the days progressed so have the number of catches. I fished for a few hours on the East arm (peg 54) and had some Gars. There are lots of Mullet, which i had feeding on my bread bag but fustratingly couldnt hook into them, most looked as if they were 1-3lb. Roy and Ben Arnold who i was fishing with both hooked in to small Mullet (pic below). Roy Also had one of 3 1/2lb in the week as well as a 6lb beauty. There is great sport to be had down the side of the walls with Wrasse, Pout and Bream taking worm and pretty much most baits. There are also Bream and Red Mullet being caught 30 yards out. I have also heard that there are a few Bass showing on both arms as well. After dark i have heard that people are catching all the above plus Sole, Smoothhound pups and baby Thornbacks.
Roy Arnold (Mullet)
Small boat - I fished just out of Shoreham (3 miles) on Sunday with Hove Deep Sea Anglers. There were Plenty of Mackerel being caught just half a mile off the beach. Given this, I would probably say that they will be ishore in their usual full force very soon, providing the weather stays good. After mackerel bashing for bait, we moved to a mark 3-3 1/2 Miles out and after a slow start ended up having a productive session. I caught loads of Bream, a Gurnard, Doggy and Thornback. My friend Clive who skippered the boat also caught lots of Bream (including a very nice one), a Plaice, Doggy and a Thornback.
Prediction for the week - As long as the winds stays down, then there should be Mackerel and Gars in large numbers at most marks along with a few Bass. It may be worth spinning at dawn or Dusk for them. If the wind does get up, then you may find that its back to Eels and Bass in the murky water.
Recent Catch Reports - 30/07/07
This week has again seen mixed weather with strong SW winds and intermittent cal periods, however, the forecast looks good for tie week hooray! So go get fishing!
Anyway, there is a strong emphasis on Brighton Marina this week because even though it had been closed for the majority of the week, when it has been fished, there have been some good catches reported. On Saturday Roy Arnold fished the arm in the day and had 2 mullet around the 3 and a half-pound mark on the east arm. There was a World Sea Fishing forum match fished on the Saturday night on the East arm in rough conditions. It was won with a 5lb Smoothhound but there were some other fish caught including Pout and Eels. There was also an 8lb Smoothhound caught on the same night but it wasn't in the match.
Glenn and me fished the arm the next day armed with a range of baits which included peeler crab, ragworm, black lug and Mackerel. With the knowledge that there had been some Smoothhound caught, we decided to arm up with peeler and give it a go. The Smoothhounds appear to be caught at distance and not close into the arm so we were casting between 70-110 yards. The day started slowly and the water was still dirty like a chocolate milkshake but flat calm. Believe it or not, I had a small whiting first cast! Then we had a couple of Eels, I have one around 1 lb 8oz. I then had a couple of schooly Bass as the tide started to run. There was plenty of weed about, which kept dragging our lines way to the right. After a few casts of this I noticed my line had swung a little more then normal and when I picked the rod up I realised that the weed was fighting back so I knew a fish was on. After a struggle with about 3lb of weed on my line, Glenn managed to land my 5lb Smoothhound, (pic below) which was unhooked, weighed and released.
Craig Ide (me, 5lb Smoothhound)
I then had another nice Eel on the next cast and a Smoothhound around 3lb 8oz after that. Glenn caught a few nice Wrasse with the biggest being just under 2lb caught on ragworm down the side. While Glenn and me were chatting, Glenn's rod double over and a nice smoothy had nailed his bait and run. After a good fight the fish (pic below) was netted and weighed at 6lb 6oz and returned. It gave a real good fight with plenty of head shaking and heart stopping runs away from the net. As the day went on and the water cleared, we decided to give sliders a go and were rewarded with 3 Mackerel. All in all a good days fishing for the SSF lads. Peeler Crab fished at range on a 1 hook 1/0 rig was the bait and method to use, as all other baits seemed to produce little for the other anglers around.
Glenn Arnold (6lb 6oz Smoothhound)
In total, I had 2 Smoothhounds (5lb & 3lb 8oz), 3 Eels (2x 1lb 8oz and 1 small), 2 schooly Bass, 1 Pout, 1 Whiting and 2 Mackerel. Glenn had 2 Smoothhounds (1 of 6lb 6oz and the other about 6oz lol), Countless Wrasse (biggest just under 2lb), 1 Eel and 1 Mackerel.
Pevensy has been producing Eels, Sole and Bass. Seaford has fished pretty well, Jay Bradley had 4 Flounders, 2 Eels and 1 Schooly all from the beach. Newhaven East arm is still producing Eels mainly to Peeler Crab baits.
Finally, anyone wanting to meet for a spot of fishing on the Saturday or Sunday this weekend please email me and maybe we can arrange
Recent Catch Reports - 23/07/2007
This week has (again) seen strong winds coming from every direction but mostly SW and this means that many locations have been pretty rough and some unfishable. We did see a brief lull in the winds on Wed/Thurs, which meant that some summer fish such as Mackerel were caught from Brighton and Hove, however, most of the week has seen Eels and Bass caught from most marks due to the rougher and dirtier seas.
I fished Newhaven east arm on Saturday along with a coupe of other anglers. The water was very dirty due to the muddy rainwater coming out of the river Ouse and it seemed perfect for Eels. I was using up the remains of my Peeler crab from last weeks boat session. I was casting a 1 hook clipped down rig (1/0 hook) about 90-110 yards towards Seaford (wind behind me) in a bid to find a Gully, which was there in the winter. I also tried a big bit of peeler down the side of the pier and this resulted in a schooly and also losing a better size fish (most likely a Bass) which struck, bent my rod over and then took me under the pier and snapped my line on the pier columns. Throughout the 4 hour session I landed 5 eels and 2 Bass, which wasn't a bad return considering the other conditions and what was being caught by the others. Crab seemed to be the best overall bait for the day and is a well known Eel bait. Harry, who was fishing with me, also had a few eels and a nice lobster.
Craig Ide with a 1 1/2lb Eel
Jay Bradley fished Pevensy Bay and had 5 Eels with the biggest being a personal best of 2 ½lb. Simon Pickles fished Southwick on Wed and had a Schooly Bass casting at range on Sandeel.
Brighton Marina has been intermittently closed this week and again Eels have been the most common sport. There have also been some Bass and some good Pout caught. When it was calmer and the Sea was clear there were a few Mackerel and Gars about on Feathers and Float tactics as well as some Wrasse down the side to rag worm, crab and prawn. The Smoothhounds appear to have moved off for now.
(if anyone has any pics of their catch or if you have had a decent fish like the ones described above then please email me at Craigide@hotmail.co.uk and i will add them).
Recent Catch Reports - 16/07/07
This week begun with strong winds, which were again S and SW but they gradually reduced in power and also swung around to the E and SE at times. Catch reports have been fairly good despite the poor weather.
I fished Brighton Marina on Wednesday night on the East arm and there were plenty of Smoothhounds about and at times it got hectic with Me and Jay both hooking into fish at the same time meaning no one could use get the drop net. We had a few fish between us all around the 3-5lb mark (pics below). There were also other anglers on the arm who also caught Smoothhounds and peelers and hard back crabs. There was also reports that a really good Conger Eel around 20lb was lost on one of the arms while being netted.
Craig Ide (me) 4lb 8oz Smoothy
Jay Bradley 4lb Smoothy
I fished the arm on Friday day, in an attempt to get a smoothy or two but unfortunately they were not playing ball as I think it was too bright as for once the sun was out. I dod manage to catch plenty of Mackerel on the East arm for dinner and to stock up the bait freezer which was looking a bit low.
Jay fished the East arm (peg 25ish) on Saturday night over the high tide and had 2 sole, 1 eel and a 3lb Smoothhound.
There was a Palace Pier competition on Sunday (Marina East arm) with a mix of fish caught, I wasn't in attendance as I was fishing an inshore boat match with Hove Deep Sea Anglers (report below) but I did get a match report from Glenn. Catches included plenty of Wrasse (with Sam Sampson catching a 2lb 7oz Wrasse), oh and a 2lb 8oz Bass. There were also Mackerel and Pollack but no Smoothhounds. Sam Sampson came 1st with 16lb and Ben Arnold came 2nd with 10lb both consisting mostly of Wrasse caught down the side.
I fished a match with H.D.S.A. on Sunday and conditions looked good early in the morning but I can tell you it got a bit lumpy with a strong Easterly for a brief while but flattened out wonderfully in the afternoon. The saying about easterly winds putting fish off was in effect as the fish didn't quite seem to be on the feed as we had expected but nevertheless a good days fishing was had. I hooked into my first Tope and ended up catching 3 with the biggest being in the pic below (they were all unhooked and released). I also had a 5lb 2oz Thornback on a Mackerel fillet and a 4lb Smoothhound on Peeler Crab (pic below).
5lb 2oz Thornback and 4lb Smoothy
My first Tope
I came a very respectable 2nd on a difficult day and my Ray won me heaviest fish, which was a nice little earner. I would like to say thanks to my skipper, Clive (who had Tope, doggies and a Smoothhound), for putting us on the fish. There were also Bream, Plaice and loads of Mackerel. All fish were caught between 2-5 miles off Hove/Shoreham coast.
Launching off the shore
Thanks to Simon Pickles for this following report: Been out and about the last couple of days.
12 July Morning - Marina East, 1 Bass of 3lb 4oz from bay 1 on prawn. Water was quite clear in the sheltered corner despite quite rough seas.
12 July Night - 2 Smoothies of 10lb and 9lb from Ferring. You must have heard of the amazing sport this week with catches of over 100lb to some anglers, crab the key bait.
This was also added to by Mike Harwood who let me know that 'there are some huge catches of hounds on the goring/ferring border beaches at the moment with fish to 17lb on peeling spider and believe me it’s a bite a cast just 80yds out' (if anyone has any pics of their catch or if you have had a decent fish like the ones described above then please email me at Craigide@hotmail.co.uk and i will add them)
Recent Catch Reports - 09/07/07
This week has again seen strong SW and S winds with similar results to last week. Thanks to Mike who let me know that Worthing pier has fished well with some good Smoothhounds being caught up to 16lb and a double figure bass around 12lb. Seaford has produced some nice Bass with Simon Lindfield catching two on Squid baits fished at low tide (7 1/2lb and 2 1/2lb). Brighton Marina has also seen plenty of Smoothhounds mostly around the 4-5lb mark on crab baits. Jay Bradley and Roy Arnold also had some decent size Smoothhounds on the East arm (pic below). Jay had 6 in total, Roy had 4 and Ben Arnold had his second ever Smoothhound around the 5lb mark.
On hearing this I fished the arm on Sunday 8th and had one Smoothhound for about 4 1/2lb (pic below) and I also lost a decent one which just kept swimming away in the tide. It crossed over another anglers line and I don't know why but he thought he also had a fish on (even though he could see me playing mine) and struck his rod causing his braid to cut through my line. I was gutted but that's fishing. There were also a few Mackerel showing up as the water cleared up.
Unfortunately this brings me on to another disappointing and very saddening point! There are thieves on the arm taking gear! I was fishing peg 17 and my mate was fishing beg 28, I put a rod in its case up near him and left it there just in case I wished to pop up there and join him later. While he was fishing some bloke just picked it up and walked off with it. Fortunately it was only a cheap rod but this is not the point. All I can say is keep your gear close. Its something I have never experienced when fishing the arm and hope that no one else is victim to it but please keep an eye on your gear.
I know this weeks report may seem a bit of a rant but one more thing, if you're a boat owner in the marina, and I know its not all of them but they know who they are, please stay well clear of the walls on the outside. You may have a flash or quick boat but you have the whole sea to use it! On 4 occasions boats came so close to the wall that I would have been able cast well beyond them! It's a safety thing as well because a taught clear line or heavy weight cast at distance could both be potentially lethal. Please be a bit considerate to us anglers that have only the arm and not the luxury of the whole sea.
Catch Reports 02/07/07
This week has again seen some pretty bad weather with southerly winds and rain being here most of the time. This has left many marks difficult or impossible to fish. As i a result i only have a few reports but given the bad weather, the fishing has actually been really good at marks where you have been able to fish. Most Marks such as Pevensy, Newhaven and Seaford have produced their share of Eels and Pout, which you would expect in this weather. There have also been some good Bass caught on Brighton, Hove and Seaford beaches. I have had reports that a double figure Smoothound was landed at worthing (i think on the pier). Brighton Marina has fished well (when open) and a few Smoothhounds are still about, with Roy A having 2 around the 4-5lb mark midweek.
There was a Palace Pier match on Brighton Marina on Sunday (01/07/07) with some good catches. There were some quality weigths (below) which were made up of a few Smoothhounds caught (7 in total) most around the 5lb mark and also plenty of Eels with my one of 2lb 7oz (pics below).
Craig Ide (5lb 3oz Smoothhound)
Results as follow:
1st Sam Sampson (16lb 10z, 3 Smoothounds, 1 Eel & 1 Gurnard)
2nd Craig Ide (me) (14lb 1oz , 1 Smoothound & 8 Eels one of which was 2lb 7oz)
3rd Roy Arnold (11lb Smoothounds & eels)
Most fish: Craig Ide, 9 fish (1 Smoothound & 8 Eels one of which was 2lb 7oz)
Heviest fish: Roy Arnold (5lb 7oz Smoothhound)
Craig Ide (2lb 7oz Eel)
I fished with mainly peeler crab on a 1 hook clipped down rig cast as far out as possible. I kept hooking Eels and after working through the smaller ones was rewarded with a few lunkers including one of 2lb 7oz, and a couple of others just under the 2lb mark. It was great sport but also caused a problem as they kept taking the bait before i any smoothhounds could get near. After a few hours of hard grafting, my rod bent right over and i knew a fish was on, after a good fight it was netted, weighed, photo'd and released. Pretty much every fish bar one or two caught in the match was returned to fight another day. All in all really great match with some excellent weights in very tough weather conditions.
