Recent Catch Reports - 25/06/07
This week has seen some pretty bad weather with southerly winds and rain being here most of the time. You think the fishing would have been pretty poor and in some cases it was, however, those that were mad enough to give it a go were justly rewarded with some really good sessions.
Jay Bradley (report writer) fished Newhaven East arm and had some good catches including 4 nice eels (1 of them in pic below), his friend ryan also had an eel around the 2lb mark and also a nice flounder. Caught on a range of baits including peeler crab and fresh black lug.
Jay and one of his Eels
Howie fished the Marina on Friday and had this (pic below) cracking Smoothhound which was between 6-7lb and a personal best. As for the Marina, the are reports of some decent size Dogfish being caught in day and night on the West arm near the extension area. There have also been some decent Bass caught at the begginning of the west arm.
Howie with s personal best Smoothhound
I fished sunday 24th with my mate keith, we fished Brighton Marina East Arm between 1600-2100 (high tide 1911). I chose this session as last week i had a nice Smoothhound and after Howies report i fancied giving it a go and seeing if they were still there. Armed withplenty of Peeler crabs and some ragworm we walked up the arm in what can only be described as mad conditions. It was raining hard and the easterly wind was pushing the water over the arm. At this point most normal peolple would turn back but for some reason I had to give it a go. I was certainly not dissapointed with what followed.
Craig Ide (me) with a personal best Smoothhound of 7lb 9oz
Things were fairly slow to start with and i had a couple of casts with not even a hint of action. I was using a 1 hook clipped down rig cast about 60-80 yards, 1/0 hooks and a 6oz grip lead. 3rd Cast and suddenly my rod tip just bent hard so i grabbed the rod and struck into it, setting the hook, fish on! Keith done a great job of netting it in the difficult conditions. A good start with a smoothhound of 4lb 8oz ( i weighed every fish on my scales before returning them). I then had another of 4lb 10oz, while i was unhooking this keiths drag was just screaming off and he had one just under the 4lb mark. I then hooked into a 4lb 10oz starry smoothhound, which was nice as it was my first starry. It got to about 2020 and so far keith had 1 smoothy and I had 5 smoothounds at the following weights, 4lb 8oz, 4lb 6oz, 4lb and 2 at 4lb 10oz, which by anyones standards would be considered an amazing days fishing. We were now running low on bait and dry clothes so we decided only one more cast while we packed the other gear up. after about 10 minutes still not any significant knocks on the rod but i had noticed that my line had dragged hard to the right, I thought maybe my weight had broke free or there was some weed on the line dragging in the tide so i picked it up and began to reel in, I quickly noticed that it was not weed and was a good sized smoothy. After a decent heart pumping fight in rough conditions she was netted. We weighed the Smoothhound and it was a cracking fish of 7lb 9oz and a personal best for me. We returned her by lowering the net and watched her swim off, which put a memorable end to a truly fantastic days fishing.
Craig Ide with a 7lb 9oz Smoothhound
Starry Smoothhound 4lb 10oz
If you do go for a Smoothound and havent fished for them before I would suggest using a running ledger or just a normal 1 hook flapper and having your drag set so that if one does grab your bait and run, you have a chance of not loosing your rod as if this isnt done your rod will go if you get a half decent one! They seem to be about as the spider crabs are around. Also unless you really like eating them, then i would putting them back, especially as females are carrying pups, please dont kill them to just show your mates later, not that you would but there is a temptation with a big catch. Just make sure you have a camera or use your mobile to take a pic and if you want to send it to me then feel free
Recent Catch Reports - 19/06/07
This week started well in terms of weather but got progressively worse and but did see a brief lull in conditions on Sunday afternoon. Brighton Marina has seen a mixed range of catches but all have been few and far between. Float fished live prawn have seen bass and pollack caught. when fished on the bottom it has been effective for wrasse and pollack. there have also been Sole, Pout, Smoothounds, flounders and some decent bass.
I fished a match for the Palace Pier Club on Sunday (17/06/07) and conditions were pretty bad at the start of the day. The match was fished on Brighton Marina east arm and as they day progressed it got pretty full. Catches began early with a few Wrasse being caught on ragworm and prawn. I had a sizable Rockling, yes Rockling in June at the beginning of the day fishing close to the wall and this is where most of the fish appeared to be caught. Catch rates were slow and there were a few other species landed at this point with most people still being in contention as the winning bag was only a few fish. Then a guy who was not fishing in the competition hooked into a 4lb 4oz Smoothound and a Bass in two casts and it seemed the action may be on the change with the incoming tide. Sam Sampson decided to have a few casts with peeler and hooked into a smoothound of around 4lb but unfortunately lost it when trying to bring up the side. He had another bite and then hooked into what he says was a very substantial fish which gave him a real run for his money, again unfortunately the fish broke free without seeing it break the surface but he says it could have been around the double figure mark. Seeing this action I decided to have a cast with Peeler, I left it out there for about 20 mins but nothing, so I rebaited with peeler and a small bit of ragworm and cast my 1 hook rig about 80yards and had another go. I was using a 1/0 hook and put the crab on with bait elastic. I was also using a slider just incase there were any gars about. I sat down after a few mins and waited, after about 10 mins I started pre baiting my next rig when BAM! My rod bent over and I grabbed it before it was almost pulled over (smoothys really go and if your not near your rod even a small one could pull it in). I reeled down and struck and I knew fish was on. It started by swimming at me and I reeled in the line to keep tension on the fish. When it got close to the wall it made a few hard runs but after a decent fight it was netted by the chap who had his one earlier on. It was a lovely specimen of 4lb 6oz (pics below), which gave a real good scrap.
I weighed, had some pics taken and then released it by lowering it back down in the drop net to catch its breath, it was an awesome sight seeing it swim back as he hung around a bit and then swam off into the depths. Its a wierd thing that only anglers will understand but releasing the fish and watching it swim away was one of my best fishing momments of late. The fish won me the match and also the prize for heaviest fish so I was understandably happy. The results are as follow:
1st Craig Ide (4lb 9oz)
2nd Ben Arnold (1lb 8oz)
Most Fish: Ben Arnold (4 fish)
Heaviest Fish: Craig Ide (Smoothound 4lb 6oz)
There was also another match fished on the arm and amongst the catches were Sole, Flounders, Wrasse, Pout and a few decent Eels.
Much of the same for other local marks with similar reports coming in for Pevensy, Seaford, Newhaven and Hove. Tidemills has also produced some more Flounders.
If you do go for a Smoothound and havent fished for them before I would suggest using a running ledger and having your drag set so that if one does grab your bait and run, you have a chance of not loosing your rod as if this isnt done your rod will go if you get a half decent one! They seem to be about as the spider crabs are around.
Recent Catch Reports - 11/06/07
This week has seen a much better weather and a return of the summer fish. There have been Mackerel and gars at most locations including Brighton Marina, Seaford, Newhaven and most local marks. They were in larger numbers earlier in the week but for some reason the quantities of fish appear to have dropped off later in the week. This was apparent on the Marina and at seaford with fish being harder to come by. On Brighton Marina there are pout, wrasse and Schooly bass being caught down the side on ragworm baits. Pollack and Bass are being caught on live prawn float fished at depth. Float fishing near the surface is working for gars and mackerel.
Southease is producing lots of eels (mostly small but the odd big one), a few good mullet and some schooly Bass but not many flounders.
Jay Bradley and his mate Ryan have had some success fishing along Rottingdean and Peacehaven for Bass on lures and Spinners with Dexter wedges proving to be very good. They also had some mackerel as well.
SussexSeaFishing held its meet on saturday which was a great success. We fished Seaford on Saturday 9th June between 1600-2030. the weather was lovely, we had some top food on the bbq and we had a nice section of beach near tidemills where there were no bathers. Given the weather we all assumed that it would be mostly Gars and Mackerel, however, this wasn't the case. Things started promisingly with Simon Pickles catching a Gar and Mackerel early on but after this it went slow and the only other garfish caught was by Glenn Arnold. People tried all sorts of tactics including floats & sliders etc but the mackerel and gars werent there, testament to this was some guys pleasure fishing/spinning down the beach and they didnt appear to catch much either. Things began to pick up when i pulled in a sizeable flounder, after this a few other people caught one or two and it appeared the fishing was picking up. As things were slow in the float I changed from using a 1 hook running ledger and 2 hook sliding float to 2 hooks (1up 1 down) and 1 on the slider alternated every cast for a 3 hook flapper using Redrag (maddies) as bait on size 4 hooks throughout. When fishing the flapper i let a bit of slack out to ensure that the baits laid on the bottom. I managed to hook into 4 more sizeable Flounders and a couple of undersize ones, beads on the bottom in the clear water seemed to be tempting them. Reports also came through that earlier that day (morning tide) that a guy had a Flounder of 2lb 2oz so maybe we should have expected it. All in all it was a good day and pretty much everyone weighed in. Reds were the bait of the day and flowing rigs fished on the bottom proved best so if your heading to tidemills this week it may be worth a go. There were plenty of prizes and a nice fixed spool reel was amongst the prizes won courtesy of www.abfishingtackle.com.
Results:
1st
Craig Ide (2lb 12oz, 5 Flounders)
2nd
Jay Bradley (1lb 2oz, 2 flounders)
3rd
Simon Pickles (15oz, 1 Gar & 1 Mackerel)
Most Fish
Craig Ide (14oz Flounder)
Heviest Fish
Craig Ide (5 Flounders)
Craig Ide 1st (me) with 3 of my flounders
Jay Bradley 2nd (report writer) with his 2 flounders
Oh and just a mention for Glenn, he tried hard to catch a flounder for the last part of the match but just couldnt get one, then as murphys law would have it, he had one cast after the final whistle and typically landed a sizeable fish, which he couldnt weigh in!
Recent Catch Reports - 04/06/07
This week has seen a shift in weather and towards the end of the week and weekend there have been some brilliant catches. At Brighton Marina there have been; Mackerel, Garfish (on float and feathers), Pollack (float and bottom fished baits), Schooly Bass on live prawn and Wrasse down the side on ragworm. There have also been some decemnt bass caught at the beggining of each arm with a few double figure fish being caught. Thanks to Simon Pickles for the info. Glenn will also be providing a match report and results in the coming few days.
Brighton and Hove beaches have been producing good numbers of Gars and Mackerel and apparently there have also been groups of Bass spoted chasing the whitebait and Mackerel.
Seaford beach has been producing some good numbers of Mackerel and Garfish with the odd Bass. Me and Glenn fished it for a few hours on saturday just spinning off the beach, we had Garfish and a few decent Mackerel. There will probably be a few Golden Grey Mullet showing up from Tidemills beaches to red rag fished on a long flowing rig.
I was kindly invited by the Hove Deep Sea Anglers to fish a match on Sunday 3rd. We fished in small boats at a distance of between 2 and 5 miles off shore over mainly open ground. Conditions could not have been better with a flat calm sea and nice sunshine. Below are some of the catches (more images of the larger fish to be added shortly). It was truly a magic days fishing in which there were 3 or 4 double figure rays (undulated and thornbacks) with Harry Leesons undulated ray being one of the biggest at 11lb 4oz and a few around the 4lb mark. There were also plenty of doggies and a few Smouthounds, Gurnards, Plaice, Garfish and Bass.
Glenn Ide with a small thornback ray Craig Ide (me) with a small smoothound.
27lb Conger and new club record Harry Leeson with an 11lb 4oz undulated ray
Steve Palmer with a 4lb ray Craig Ide with a Smoothound and a Scooly bass
The day started with me, my old man and Steve fishing about 2 miles out for bait and within minutes of stopping we had plenty of Mackerel for a days bait. We then headed to a variety of marks between 4-5 miles off shore. Steve kept putting us on the fish. In total I had 7 Dogfish (only allowed to weigh in a maximum of 2, club rules) and 6 of them swam back unharmed, I also had a smoothound, Bream, Bass and Gurnard. Whilst we were fishing we would also see other anglers and got to witness a number of great fights with double figure rays. The best fight which we were fortunate to witness was the 27lb conger (pic above) and boy did it go! the previous club record was around the 8lb mark so it shows what a cracking specimen it was. Steve also had a nice ray on his last cast as he had been trying for them all day and was justly rewarded for his effors with a Thornback ray of just under 5lb. He also lost a decent bass but we best not talk about that too much. Anyway, a massive thanks to all those at the club and for Steve and Harry who invited me along as it was a fabulous days fishing. Recent Catch Reports - 28/05/07
This week has seen a mixed bag of weather meaning a variety of catches with summer fish being caught for mostr of the week and then winds causing the fish to slow down a little. Brighton Marina fished pretty well with large catches of mackerel and garfish on both arms. There have also been a few schooly bass about. Pollack have been going mad for live prawn fished fairly deep on float gear but none to any really great sizes. There are plenty of good wrasse being caught down the sides of the wall on ragworm.
I fished Seaford on friday night for a few hours of spinning and pleasure fishing. I had a few mackerel and gars using light gear and they gave a good fight. I also live baited a couple of joeys for bass but didnt have any luck this time. There are quite a few crabs about nicking hook baits of you are fishing the bottom, I had a couple of hook lengths snipped by their claws. I also saw a shoal of Bass swimming very close to the shore but unfortunately couldnt seem to hook one. Newhaven east arm is also fishing well with reports of decent bags of mackerel and garfish as well as the odd bass, wrasse and pollack. The river Ouse is still fishing pretty poor with only the odd eel and flounder being caught, there are quite a few schooly bass being caught up to 1lb so all you saltwater fly fishermen may want to have a look as it could be good sport on light tackle. the mullet are about but not in great numbers as yet but this should improve fairly soon.
There was also a night competition a few miles on from goring on saturday night, not much was caught and apparntly the winning bag was a mullet, eel & a flounder. If anyone knows the results and catches at the 3 day festival at goring could they let me know and i will post them on here for all to see.
There is also a Palace Pier club competition this coming sunday (03/06/07) book in is between 8.00 and 8.30 am and entry is £2.50. You can come along as a guest and its a really good way to improve your all round angling skills. for more details click here.
SussexSeaFishing is also looking top host a match in the next few weeks so any suggestions on location, date and time would be appreciated I am thinking sunday June 10th or a saturday night match on the 9th, let me know. There will be some quality prizes on offer including reels, line, tackle and money. If we have a good spell of weather I am also considering doing a lures & spinners only match (no feathers) so let me know if you would be interested and any possible locations. email me at craigide@hotmail.co.uk
Thanks to Simon Pickles who emailed this report:
I know a few of the guys who fished a match on Goring Beach last Sat evening. It was won with about 8lb of small flounders and red rag was the bait needed. You also needed a peg with sand in front of it. As you may know Goring beach has a long patch of large pebbly ground. Lots of people blanked or only had 1 or 2 small fish.
On the small morning and evening tides last week there were loads of mackerel around the beaches at Hove and Brighton. Sometimes hard to catch but I managed my first on the fly which was fun. My friend Neil had another good Bass (~4lb) on the plug Thursday evening in that spot I mentioned

Recent Catch Reports - 21/05/2007
This week has seen really mixed weather with strong SW winds earlier in the week and then calming down to nearly flat calm on the sunday. Most areas fished ok early in the week with a few bass being caught and reports of some decent eels at newhaven and seaford mostly on peeler crab. Unfortunately as the weather was pretty ribbish there are not too many reports from around our coast this week. There have also been a few doggies and smoothounds beggining to show at seaford and brighton at night.
Jay Bradley (report writer) fished a whole host of places over the weekend including dungeness where he had some decent and monster Pout but he ended up moving as there was so much seaweed. He also fished Pevensy Bay on saturday night and had some decent Pout on lugworm. He then opted to change baits and use some peeler crab which he cast about 150 yards. he left it for about 30 mins and had a pull on the rod tip and then left it for a bit as thought there may be a ray on it. he struck into it and landed a 4lb thornback which is a cracking fish from the beach, which he then returned to fight another day. I have a picture but due to technical difficulties i cant add it at the momment.
I fished Brighton Marina in a Palace Pier club competition on Sunday 20th and there were some quite good catches throughout the day. Bearing in mind that right up until saturday evening we had strong winds, most of us had anticipated pretty dirty water and took loads of bait, however, the water was pretty clear and it seemed that Garfish, Mackerel and Wrasse were amongst the offerings. Results and full report as follows:
1st Sam Sampson 13lb 11oz (21 fish, Wrasse and Garfish)
2nd Craig Ide (me) 6lb 15oz (11 fish, Mackerel and Garfish)
3rd Glenn Arnold (report writer for the site and current champion) 4lb 13oz (8 fish, Wrasse and Garfish)
Most Fish: Sam Sampson (21)
Heaviest Fish: Graham (1lb 4oz Bass)
Top Junior: Richard
A catch and release system was adopted with the majority of the fish being returned.
Match Report: Most of us fished the end of the east arm around pegs 50 but some of the club members fished around pegs 15. The day started great for me as within minutes of the off a shoal of garfish and mackerel appeared on the surface just within casting range. I hooked into 3 gars and 2 mackerel within the 1st half hour. I was really enjoying it as i just fitted a new reel with some braid and it gave a great fight on float gear and a spinning rod. The fishing then slowed down for an hour or two and the odd garfish was still being pulled out. Sam stepped up his catch rate and was bringing in a number of wrasse weighing between 8oz & 1lb 3oz on rag and peeler crabs fished on a 3 hook flapper close to the wall. He seemed to have the magic touch, as always, as he was pulling them out within seconds. He then brought in a few double shots of garfish using a slider at the times when the wrasse fishing slowed down. I caught all of my fish float fishing or on the slider and continued to catch as the day went on. The slider was definatley proving to be the most productive method for catching gars and mackerel throughout the day. When i did float fish i varied my depth from 8ft and got deeper as the day went on to about 12-14ft as the day went on and this seemed to work for me. The catches consistenly came and there was no real state where the fishing suddenly boomed or stopped. During the day there were also a couple of nice flounders caught and a schoolie bass. Near the begining of the arm, where glenn was fishing, there was surprisingly a codling of 2lb caught which was quite amazing! The fishing at the beggining of the arm really picked up towards the end of the match and this is when glenn had the most of his fish. All in all a suprisingly good and enjoyable days fishing and good to see the sussexseafishing lads up there in the winnings.
This week the weather is due to be a bit on and off but the winds should turn more northenly so the sea should remain calm and there should be a few summer fish about and maybe try fishing a live joey to see if there are any bass about as there was a 10lb Bass caught off the Marina west arm on peeler crab in the week. let us know how you get on and tight lines....
Recent Catch Reports - 14/05/2007
This week has seen strong winds coming from all directions but mostly SW which has turned the water really dirty, which has made m, ackerel and garfishing pretty poor. The Marina has been closed all week but was open on sunday 13th. Me, Glenn and Roy fished the east arm and had limited sucess. We anticipated catching more as the water looked perfect but hey thats fishing. We caught a selection of fish including Pout, Rockling, Flounder (pic below) and quite a few small snotty eels. We had a variety of baits including Ragworm, squid, peeler crab, mackerel and lugworm. The lugworm and peeler crab proved to be the most productive baits of the day. I used 2 rods one with a 3 hook flapper and the other with a big mackerel bait on a pennel rig. I had no touches on the big bait but the 3 hook flapper rigs proved to work well for me and Glenn. Glenn opted for a long flowing rig and this proved to be the best of the lot. This brings me nicely onto the palace pier club competition which is sunday 20th May, Click here to access full details of the Brighton Palace Pier Angling Association's match fixtures for 2007. There have only been 2 so far and there are plenty left to fish. you can either come along to give it a try or sign up as a club member. For more information click here.
Thanks to Damo who emailed me to let me know that there have also been some very good sized eels coming from Seaford and Newhaven way. They may not be everyones idea of a great catch as they tangle your line up but on the right gear they can give a cracking fight. I also had reports that Climping was fishing well last week (up until the strong winds) with some mullet being caught in the day and Smoothounds and doggies after dark. There have also been some doggies caught at Worthing pier as well. Sorry this weeks one is on the short side but not many people have fished so theres not too much to report.
Recent Catch Reports - 08/05/2007
The early part of the week saw good weather with N & NE winds keeping the sea calm. Most areas produced Mackerel and Gars on float and feathers with Brighton marina being ne of the most productive marks, however, reports indicate that the fishing has been a bit hit and miss at times with one day producing plenty of catches and the other day with far fewer. The may blume (or rot) is apparently here and this can turn the fishing off. This said, the marina is still producing some good Wrasse and Pollack.
There are reports that Climping is producing some good Mullet, Bass and doggies at the momment. Seaford has also been producing Mackerel in good numbers during the day and some decent pout and the odd doggy after dark.
The Wind turned around over the bank holiday weekend and this has lead to some S & SW winds making the sea churn up and become dirty again. This may the the time that its worth trying for a Bass from the shore.
Me and Glenn are planning a trip to Climping this sunday (weather permitting) so if your heading that way or are fishing a venue you think we may be interested in the drop me an email. We may change our location dependant on the forecast. Also apologies that glenns top 5 has been a bit delayed for May (PC problems) but it will be here shortly.
Recent Catch Reports - 01/05/2007
Firstly a big sorry for the reports and tides being a day or two late but i hope i can make up for it with a bumper report for you this week.
Glenns top five to fish for may is nearly here and is due any day soon. In the mean time he has this report for us. Pevensey Bay has been producing some large eels upto 2lb 10oz and school bass (mainly between 1lb-3lb) to peeler crab baits, also there have been flounders, dabs, rockling and the odd plaice showing mainly to fresh lug and rag. Fishing at Pevensey has been very inconsistent with large catches one day followed by poor catches the next.
The 1 day of rain last thursday has seemed to spoiled the fishing up the river ouse, the water has turned all cloudy and the flounders have disappeared. My session on sunday at southease was quite eventful if you enjoy catching 8inch school bass and boot lace eels all day, there was no sign of any flounders and the mullet havent been around in force although i did miss one mullet bite.
Also Climping near Littlehampton is fishing well. Fished it last night for 2.5 hours up to HT at 11 and had a nice Bass of 3lb at 9.00 on peeler at about 100yds. The sands there warm up during the day and the water was very warm too. Aparantly some sting ray and smoothound have come out too during the week to crab. Previous week golden grey mullet were caught on reg rag. Also loads of schoolies (undersize unfortunately) coming from the Worthing beaches - I fished the pier match last night which was won with 3 dogfish off the end.(thanks to Simon Pickles for this report).
Seaford is fishing well with a few more Mackerel showing as the days progress and im sure it wont be long until there is a good Bass caught. After dark there are some decent Pout being caught as well. there are flounders being caught on ragoworm baits. Newhaven East arm is now producing Mackerel and Gars as well. Howie Harden has also been fishing Seaford recently and has reported that in the last 2 weeks since we have been fishing seaford splash point at night.we have had some monster pout, large silver eels, and some good size dog fish (pics below) amongst ling and small pin whiting.these fish have been to range of baits but have fonud sand eels/squid and mackeral have been working much better than any of the worm baits that we used. He would'nt recomend fishing during the day as we have tried and not even had a bite untill it got realy dark and then it really hots up!!
Howie H with a Silver Eel Zak H with a monster pout (both caught at seaford)
Thanks to Nick Thasarather who let me know that there are nets very close in to the shore at rottingdean near the old cafe. He said that he has given it a few goes but not had much success and because it looks like it is being heavily netted may be effecting the fishing. He also fished Brighton Marina fished east arm today 2 hours either side of HT, peg 22. Quite a lot of people there but quite a lot of blanks. Used a storm strike float (3/4oz), silver/red beads/sequins/blade and size 4 hooks. Bait, rag tipped with mackerel strip. Caught a 2ft gar fish at about 8ft depth - best one I've caught to date - between 1-2lb but didn't have scales. Also hooked but lost a sizeable mackerel. Reports from the west arm were that people catching quite a few mackerel. He has also kindly written some info for the new Spinning and lure fishing guide section.
Other reports from Brighton marina include the fact that there are still squid being caught (squid jigs are best for catching them). There are also still a few Plaice being caught on ragworm baits matched with a spoon and some beads. There are still some good wrasse being caught down the sides on rag, crab and prawn.
My (craig Ide) top tip If i were float fishing for makerel or gars this week on the marina i would fish a 2 hook float rig, size 4 hooks and thin strips of makerel hooked once through the top so that the rest is dangling down and can float about in the water. i would fish anywhere from 6-12 ft deep for gars and 10-16ft for Mackerel. You will catch Pollack using this method but you need to fish around 18ft deep.
I just want to finish by saying a massive thanks to everyone who emailed with reports this week as it really helps put people on the fish and helps the site to grow, which in turn is helping other anglers (i hope).
Recent Catch Reports - 23/04/2007
This week has seen the introduction of the summer fish arriving with many of our local marks such as Seaford, Brighton, Worthing pier and Eastbourne providing sport with Mackerel, Garfish and Bass. There have been some good Pout showing at night from Seaford as well. Pevensy has also produced some mixed catches after dark.
The Palace Pier club held a competition on sunday 22/04/07 at Brigthon Marina. 18 people fished and there were a variety of catches including Garfish, Pollack, Wrasse and Plaice. the winning weight was 6lb of Wrasse by Sam Sampson, Ben Arnold came 2nd with a mixed bag including a cracking Pollack of 1lb 11oz which is a good sized pollack for the marina (pic below). Roy Arnold came 3rd with Pollack and Wrasse. I had a mixed bag with 2 gars, 2 wrasse and a Plaice. I caught the Gars caught using mackerel strips with one on a slider rig and the other on a normal float set up. I had 2 wrasse fishing close to the marina wall using a 3 hook flapper and king rag (2 up 1 down) both fish were caught on the bottom hook and this was the hook that had the most bites. I also caught the Plaice at distance on ragworm using a flowing rig with plenty of beads while slider fishing. The Pollack were caught using live prawns or mackerel strips and mostly at depth of 18ft+. The wrasse took ragworm and live prawns. There was also a squid caught which was just under 2lb (pic below).

This week there has seen brilliant sunshine and warm weather. I have reports of various catches from across our coast.
Brighton Marina has seen the start of the summer with Mackerel and Garfish being caught on float and feathers. A few Bass have also been landed. There have also been Plaice and Wrasse caught using ragworm fished on the bottom. The mackerel that have been caught have mostly been from the west arm and have been of good size with Sam Sampson catching one of 1lb 6oz. There are alo reports that there is a baby bottle nose dolphin currently in the area and has been seen close to the marina entrance.
Worthing Pier has also seen Garfish and Mackerel caught on float and feathering techniques as has Seaford beaches. Jay Bradley (report writer) fished a few miles off the seaford coast and said that he had plenty of Dabs and whiting at dusk. He also had some cracking fish including a 4lb Pollack and a 2lb Plaice. He Also fished Seaford beaches at night and had 3 Bass around the 2-3lb mark fishing 80 yads out as well as some monster Pout getting around the 1lb mark. He was using Rag worm and fresh lug on a 3 hook paternoster. Newhaven East arm has been effected by the dredging of the harbour making the water pretty dirty causing the summer fishing to be put on hold for a short while as mackerel and gars prefer clearer water.
Both the Ouse and the Adur has produced Flounders, eels, schoolies and Mullet mostly on red rag (maddies) and peeler crab but the mullet only on the ragworms.
I went for a trip out on a with Steve Palmer who kindly invited me out for a days fishing, courtesy of the Hove Deep Sea Angling Club. I had a fantastic day and between us we caught a wide variety of fish and some to relatively good sizes. Species included Mackerel, Garfish, Bream, Dogfish, Codling, Dragonets, Plaice, Dabs and Herring. We used mostly long flowing running ledger rigs with ragworm baits, on our other rods we had one rod each set up for doggies with a nice big chunk of Mackerel. at times we also used feathers and float gear to get fresh bait. We fished a variety of marks at 2, 4 and 5 miles out and i had a thoroughly enjoyable day catching some great fish on light tackle. Pictures of the days action to follow shortly.

Firstly Glenn's top five to fish in Apri report is now here so click here for the full guide as it will put you on the fish this month! This week there has seen brilliant sunshine and warm weather. I have reports of various catches from across our coastline. Brighton Marina has now begun producing Mackerel and Gars on float fishing gear with Plaice, Flounders and good Wrasse being caught on the bottom, mostly on King Rag. Sam Sampson had a Mackerel of 1lb 6oz on themarina west arm, which is a very good sized mackerel.
Southease has begun to produce fish. There was a match fished there
on Easter Sunday and the winning weight was 3lb with 3 flounders. There were quite a few Flounders about and the ones that were caught were generally of good size. Glenn Arnold (report writer) had one of 1lb 2oz which is a pretty decent fish (pic below). There were also plenty of mullet swimming about but non were hooked. Glenn was using a long flowing 3 hook flapper rig with mostly red rag for bait but the occassional peeler crab was also used. Generally these are the only 2 baits you need up the river.
Hove Deep Sea Angling club had a boat match just off Brighton, Hove and Shorham this weekend with Plaice being caught as expected, however, they were surprised at how few fish were landed as usually this is a good time of year to target Plaice from the boats. There were also small Codling about which was relatively surprising as the boats were generally fishing between 1-4 miles out over open ground.
Thanks to Simon Pickles for emailing me with his recent catch report.
He says 'Thought you may be interested in a session I had today on
the River Adur just upstream from the railway bridge. I fished 2 hours
up and 1.5 down from high using peeler crab bait. Bites started after
about 30 mins and were steady up until the tide turnedwhen it went
dead for 40 mins. Then they started up again and were still biting when
I left. I ended up with 4 Flounders and my novice mate Greg had 2.
All sizeable, 5 of 35-38cm abd one of 42cm. I’d put this top of my 5
to fish in April.'
Thanks to K Cheesman who let me know that there are a few plaice showing up at Seaford in the daytime and there was a cracking fish
of 4lb caught. He has kindly also done a product review for us as well (below).
